Oct. 14, 2012
Palm Desert, Calif. -
Junior Emily Wood and sophomore Samantha Stancato tied for 15th place individually to lead the University of Wyoming women's golf team to sixth in the final teams standings during Sunday's final round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club. The duo both totaled 227 (+11) to pace the Cowgirls to a 922 (+58), while Mountain West foe Fresno State won the 19-team tournament with an event-record 885 (+21).
"I was pleased with our effort this weekend and was happy to end the fall season on a positive note," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We've been consistently competitive this fall and have had multiple players contribute and improve throughout the season. Once again, it was fabulous to host this tournament with The Classic Club and Troon Golf in Palm Desert. I can't thank them enough for all their effort in putting on this very competitive tournament."
Stancato claimed the third top-25 finish of her career and second this fall thanks in part to a season-low 75 (+3) during Sunday's final round, while Wood earned the first top-25 finish of her career with a 76 (+4). Freshman Tyler Barker fell back to 47th place at 238 (+22) after shooting 84 (+12) in the final round, while senior Dana Zamprelli moved up to 49th at 239 (+23) with a 77 (+5) on Sunday. Freshman Kathleen Kershisnik also finished with the same total to tie for 49th as well after an 80 (+8) in the last round. Junior Stacey Blunt and sophomore Kristen Jensen played as individuals and finished at 246 (+30) and 256 (+40), respectively.
"Emily [Wood] and Samantha [Stancato] have really been mentally tough in the last two tournaments and it has shown," Stender said. "They have been focused on improving their weaknesses and have given us a chance to go into the offseason with confidence. We need to keep believing in the process and keep working hard during the next few months."
The tournament concludes fall action for Wyoming, as the Cowgirls are now off until the Folino Invitational on Feb. 17-19 in Industry Hills, Calif.
