Oct. 16, 2007
CHULA VISTA, Calif. -
In their final tournament of the 2007 fall season, the Wyoming Cowgirl golf team finished in 17th place out of 19 teams at the Lady Aztec Fall Classic in Chula Vista, Calif.
UW recorded a disappointing team round of 321 (+33) on Tuesday and dropped three spots in the team standings with a total mark of 637 (+61). On Monday the Cowgirls shot a team round of 316 (+28) and were tied for 14th.
"We did have more birdies today, but we also had more big numbers and that really hurt us," said Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender. "Those big numbers were something we had been able to avoid most of the semester and just couldn't today. We'll take the good and bad from this round, just like we do with every other round we play, and then move on.
"There are definitely a lot of positives that we can take out of this fall. A high standard was set early on by this team and we know what we're capable of. Everyone knows what needs worked on in the off-season and that we can play well this spring."
A bright spot for Wyoming was the finish by senior Laura Mengelkamp, who tied for eleventh place out of 104 participants. Mengelkamp narrowly missed her third straight top-ten finish at the annual Aztec Classic, where she had placed fourth in 2005 and fifth in 2006. Laura used four birdies on the day to fuel her final round scorecard of 76 (+4). Her 36-hole total was 151 (+7).
Mengelkamp now has 24 finishes in the top-25 of a major field over the course of her collegiate career.
San Diego native and UW sophomore Sarah Fogerty closed the tournament with a score of 79 (+7). She tied for 50th. Fogerty was consistent all event and finished with 23 pars.
The team title was won by UC Irvine, whose two-round total was 593 (+17). Hawaii and East Tennessee State were both ten strokes back, tied for second place with scores of 603 (+27).
The individual medalist was UC Irvine's Patty Chawalitmetha, who carded 142 (-2) over 36 holes. Krystina Gillenwater of CSU-Northridge was three strokes back at 145 (+1).
The event, hosted by San Diego State, was held at Salt Creek Golf Course in Chula Vista, which measures 6,216 yards, par 72.
Wyoming's next competition will be in the spring of 2008 at the NAU/Red Rocks Invite in Sedona, Ariz. The tournament will be held March 1-2.
