The Cowgirl golf team opens the spring season this weekend at the Kiawah Island Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C. The 36-team tournament, hosted by the College of Charleston, is the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country. The three-day event tees off Sunday and ends Tuesday afternoon at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort Cougar and Oak Point courses.

The Kiawah Island Classic features six teams ranked in the top 100 of GolfWeek's collegiate rankings. The tournament is the first event for the Cowgirls on the East Coast since UW competed in North Carolina in 2007.

Wyoming returns to the course after a strong performance at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, where the Cowgirls finished 10th in the 20-team event. Senior Stacey Blunt was UW's highest finisher, ending the event at 11-over par finishing tied for 13thplace.

Senior Emily Wood leads the team in stroke average at 77.2 per round. She was a consistent presence in the UW lineup during the fall season leading the team and ranking No. 62 nationally in birdies with 31.

Blunt and junior Samantha Stancato tied for second on the team in stroke average at 77.4 per round during the fall. Blunt has closed out tournaments on a high note this season averaging a team-best 75.33 strokes in the final round of play.

The Cowgirls participate in four tournaments during the spring season, including the regular-season hosting the Cowgirl Classic April 7-8 in Maricopa, Ariz. UW wraps up the season at the Mountain West Championship on April 24-26 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
