June 12, 2003
Laramie, Wyo. - University of Wyoming senior golfer Alison McGuire has been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America squad. She has been selected a Third Team Academic All-American in the At-Large category. It is the first Verizon Academic All-America honor for McGuire. She earned Verizon Academic All-District VII At-Large honors the past two years.
McGuire was one of only 45 female student-athletes nationally to be named an Academic All-American in the At-Large category, which includes the women's sports of: crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
In addition to the at-large teams, Verizon also sponsors Academic All-America teams in the sports of: women's volleyball, football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and cross country.
McGuire, a native of Cheyenne, Wyo., achieved a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average in political science, with a minor in international studies. She graduated from UW this past May. Also a graduate of Cheyenne Central High School, she was one of only 10 female student-athletes to be selected to the 2003 Women's All-District At-Large First Team in District VII.
District VII consists of the states of: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming; and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Those student-athletes chosen First Team Academic All-District qualify for the national ballot.
Other academic honors she has achieved during her four years at the University of Wyoming include being named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar team twice -- in 2001 and 2002 (the 2003 team has not yet been announced). She is a three-time Mountain West Conference Academic All-Conference selection. Her senior year, she was named the Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Political Science at UW.
On the golf course, McGuire was elected a team captain for the 2002-03 season. She played in all 11 of Wyoming's tournaments as a senior, and played in the last 21 consecutive tournaments in which Wyoming participated. Her best finish as a senior was a 20th-place showing, out of 90 individuals, at the Boise State Fall Classic.
She is the daughter of Jan and Pat McGuire of Cheyenne.
Nominations and selections of student-athletes to the Verizon Academic All-America and All-District teams are made by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA splits the nation into eight districts.
