Wyoming Women's Golf Opens Fall Season Monday
Sep 8, 2013
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming women's golf team, led by ninth-year head coach Josey Stender, will open its 2013-14 campaign on Monday when the Cowgirls begin play at the CSU Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic. The 54-hole event will continue through Tuesday at the Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
"Every year it's a great opportunity for our team to start off at this event. With it being just down the road and for us to be somewhat familiar with the course, it's a great advantage," Stender said. "For the returners, this is almost like a second home and that can maybe help to feed down to the freshmen. It's an awesome starting point for the girls to see where their strengths and weaknesses are and see where we are as a team."
After finishing eighth at the Mountain West Championship last season, the Cowgirls are eager to begin the season on the right foot. This year, Wyoming will be led by seniors Stacey Blunt and Emily Wood. They will be joined by juniors Kristen Jensen and Samantha Stancato and sophomores Kathleen Kershisnik and Emily Woodard. New to the Cowgirls this year are freshmen Mackenzie Barrie, Taylor Dorans and Gabrielle Gibson.
"We are lucky to have that core group of returners that we will be able to lean towards very heavily as the year moves on," Stender added. "The seniors have a tremendous amount of experience and both have played very consistently, which we hope to continue."
For this week's tournament, Wyoming will feature a roster of junior Stancato, sophomore Kershisnik, freshmen Barrie and seniors Blunt and Wood. Dorans will be competing as an individual.
The 17-team field features six other Mountain West teams including Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State and UNLV that will compete at the par 72, 6,352-yard Ptarmigan Country Club. Other teams competing will be California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Long Beach State, Northern Colorado, UC Davis and UTEP. Live stats will be available through Golfstat.com.
Last season at the CSU Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, Dana Zamprelli led the UW golf team to 13th in the final team standings. Zamprelli was the Cowgirls' top finisher with a score of 228 (+12), as Tyler Barker carded a 234 (+18). Blunt and Stancato both hit a 244 (+28) with Jensen, who played as an individual shooting 234 (+19).
The Cowgirls will compete in five tournaments this fall while hosting the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Oct. 12-13, in Palm Desert, Calif.
