Cowgirl Golf to Not Compete in Weekend Tournament
Sept. 13, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Saturday's football game between the University of Wyoming and the University of Kansas has been cancelled with this afternoon's decision by the Big 12 Conference to cancel the weekend's slate of games. The UW-Kansas game may be rescheduled at a mutually agreeable time.
UW has also cancelled this weekend's volleyball, soccer, golf, and cross-country matches in respect for the victims of Tuesday's terror attacks.
"I applaud the decision by the Big 12 Conference to cancel Saturday's schedule of football games, including the University of Wyoming's scheduled game against the University of Kansas," says UW President Philip L. Dubois.
"Sports fans who have followed the discussions of intercollegiate conferences and professional leagues know that members and leadership of these organizations have gone through difficult, soul-searching decision-making processes, with no national consensus emerging.
"Mountain West Conference teams scheduled to play against opponents from other athletic conferences which had elected to play Saturday's games were contractually bound to honor those commitments. Prior to today's reversal, the Big 12 Conference had decided to play all previously scheduled games, including the University of Kansas game against the University of Wyoming. Today's decision by the Big 12 Conference frees UW from our contractual commitment.
"We recognize that some will applaud this decision as being sensitive to the tragedy and aftermath of Tuesday's events. Others will criticize this decision as being inconsistent with the idea that the nation should return to normal activities as soon as possible. We respect both views, but we agree with, and appreciate, the decision of the Big 12 Conference to cancel Saturday's slate of games."
