Wyoming Golf Signs Three Student-Athletes for 2013-14

Laramie, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming golf program announced the signing of three student athletes to the class of 2013-14 on Monday. Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender welcomes Taylor Dorans and Gabrielle Gibson, while Cowboy head coach Joe Jensen signed Ryan Wallen.

Taylor Dorans


Taylor Dorans, Erie, Colo., Broomfield High School
A native of Erie, Colo.,Taylor Dorans joins the Cowgirls from Broomfield High School after lettering four years in golf under coach John Ferraro. During Dorans' freshmen and sophomore seasons she finished sixth in the Colorado High School Athletic Association 4A Championship. As a junior she finished the CHSAA 4A Championship in fourth place. She is a three-time All-State honoree, earning the honor from her freshmen to junior year. She is also a two-time Northern League MVP. She was named the 2012 Boulder Daily Camera Player of the Year. She was also a member of the Colorado Junior America's Cup team.

During the summer of 2012, she competed in the United States Golf Association Junior Girls championship and the Junior World Championship. In the classroom, Dorans is a four-year honor member and a member of National Honor Society. She also earned a Broomfield Super Kid Award with a 4.3 grade point average. Dorans is the daughter of Rich and Patti. She also has two older sisters, Molly who plays golf at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont., and Danielle, who plays golf at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Stender on Dorans: "Taylor has really transformed her game this past spring and summer and stepped it up to what is going to fit very well at the collegiate level. She has a lot of experience at the national level and has proven herself as one of the best prep players in Colorado. She has a great mentality and temperament on the golf course. She has excellent course management and understands her strengths and weaknesses. She's not the type of player that is going to get in trouble a lot on the course."

Gabrielle Gibson


Gabrielle Gibson, Temecula, Calif., Great Oak High School
A native Temecula, Calif., Gabrielle Gibson will join the Cowgirls in 2013 after lettering four years in golf at Great Oak High School for coach Robert Murphy. As a senior, she led her team to a Southwestern League Co-Championship. Individually as her teams co-captain she earned First Team All-League and All-Valley honors. She also qualified for the CIF Individual championships. Gibson was also a First Team All-League and All-Valley her junior season and a CIF qualifier. During that season she earned her teams integrity award. As a sophomore she earned Second Team All-Valley honors and First Team All-League honors. During her sophomore season she helped lead her team to a Southwestern League Championship and qualify for the CIF Championships.

Gibson also lettered four seasons in track and field at Great Oak including earning Athlete of the Year honors her freshman season. In the classroom, she was a four-year scholar-athlete award recipient. She is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and will earn an International Baccalaureate Diploma. Gibson is the daughter of Glenn and Kendy.

Stender on Gibson: "Gabrielle is a very determined, hard-working athlete that is goal oriented and very mature, plus she is an athletic long hitter so the transition to collegiate golf won't be hard for her. Gabrielle has also participated in a number of highly competitive junior events which has positioned her as one of the top players in Southern California."

"These two girls are very similar as far as academics and being a disciplined all-around athlete are important to them, which is a tribute to the great families they come from. They both know what it takes to be successful, so I feel they have their best golf ahead of them. Gabrielle and Taylor enjoy the team aspect of golf, which is hard to find in an individual sport, so they will fit right in with our program."

Ryan Wallen


Ryan Wallen, Blaine, Wash., Blaine High School
Ryan Wallen joins the Cowboys as a three-year letterwinner at Blaine High School in Blaine, Wash. He had an excellent prep career under head coach Steve Barthlow. The highlight of Wallen's prep career was a Washington state championship during his sophomore season. He also earned First Team All-Northwest Conference that season. Following his sophomore season in 2011 he was named the Whatcom County Boys Golfer of the Year. He also earned that honor following his junior season of 2012. He earned two runner-up finishes in the Washington state tournament during his freshman and junior seasons, while also earning First Team All-Northwest Conference honors. He has been named his team's MVP all three seasons of his high school career.

During high school events he is carrying a 72.3 scoring average. During his career he has carried a 73.94 stroke average in nationally ranked events. In the 2012 PNGA stroke play Wallen tied for second. The previous year he finished tied for 12th at the PNGA stroke play. Wallen is the son of Jerry and Susie and has two siblings, Jess and Ben.

Jensen on Wallen: "Ryan has had terrific high school and junior career thus far in the state of Washington. He has played and beaten some excellent Division I players during his high school career. He is a top three player in the state of Washington and we are fortunate to have a student-athlete like Ryan become part of our program."
