The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team began its 2011 season on Saturday with an exhibition match against the University of Denver. The Cowgirls fell to the Pioneers 3-1 on the Louis S. Madrid soccer pitch.

"Denver is a really good team," Cowgirl head coach Danny Sanchez said. "They exposed us in some areas and now we know we need to work on them. We started five freshmen today and I was pleased with how they acclimated themselves to the game."

In the first half, the Pioneers were able to get the first shot off against the Cowgirls in the sixth minute but the UW defense was up to the task and made the save. Just two minutes later the Cowgirls would answer the Pioneers early pressure. Cowgirl freshman Sheree Small made a deep pass to her teammate senior Kayla Davis who was able to move past one DU defender and put the ball in the top right corner of the DU net. The Davis goal made the score 1-0 in favor of Wyoming. In the 30th minute the Pioneers were able to equalize the game after a UW foul. Pioneer Kaitlin Bast received a pass from teammate Sam Harder and kicked it over the outreached hand of UW keeper Megan Burke. The Pioneers would strike one more time against the Cowgirls before the end of the half. In the 41st minute, DU's Taylor Bailey got a breakaway at the UW goal and kicked the ball low and past UW keeper Burke. The Bailey goal gave DU a 2-1 lead and they would never look back. Bailey was assisted on her goal by Jacey Birtcher. The half ended with score 2-1 in favor DU.

Heading out of the locker room the Cowgirls faced a 2-1 deficit to come back from. The Cowgirls were able to take three of the first four shots in the half but could not get one past DU keeper Maria Khan. In the 74th minute the Pioneers would put the game out of reach for the Cowgirls. Pioneer Bailey would pick up her second goal of the game on a cross that she headed past UW goalkeeper Courtney Merkle, giving the Pioneers a 3-1 advantage. The score stayed 3-1 in favor of the Pioneers at the final horn.

"This was a very good game to prepare us for next weekend," Sanchez added.

The Cowgirls will now travel to Boise, Id., to take part in the Boise State Tournament, Aug. 19-21. Wyoming will play Oregon on Aug. 19 beginning at 2:30 p.m. MT and conclude the tournament on Aug. 21 against Montana beginning at 11:30 a.m. MT.
