LARAMIE, Wyo. - Despite outshooting Montana, the Cowgirl soccer team opened the 2012 regular season with a 2-0 loss to the Grizzlies Friday night at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.

"It's a tough loss, but you have to give credit to Montana for taking it to us," said Wyoming coach Pete Cuadrado. "I thought we played well at several points in the game, but we missed out on some opportunities and we'll learn from this to be ready for Lamar on Sunday."

The Grizzlies took an early 1-0 advantage at the 15:19 mark as Ashley Tombelaine took a cross from India Watne as she got behind the Wyoming defense and shot it past goalie Courtney Merkle for the score.

Wyoming pushed the ball in the second half and outshot Montana seven to six, but the Grizzlies extended the lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute when Erin Craig headed a Lauren Costa free kick from 45 yards out and got it past Merkle for another goal.

The Cowgirls had five corner kick opportunities to Montana's four and ended the game with nine shots to the Grizzlies' seven. Wyoming also had seven shots on goal to Montana's three.

Freshman Mollee Ramsay had three shots and midfielder Loren Mahoney added two. Cowgirls Olivia Mohtadi, Sydney Jones, Jenny Johnson and Lucie McDowell each contributed one shot apiece.

Wyoming returns to action Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Lamar Cardinals at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
