LARAMIE, Wyo. - A strong offensive attack from the Cowgirl soccer team lifted Wyoming to a 3-1 victory over Lamar Sunday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.

With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 1-1 on the year while the Cardinals fall to 0-2.

"It's great to get the first win under your belt," said Wyoming coach Pete Cuadrado. "We had a lot of fight today. Lamar, like Montana, is a physical team and I thought we did a better job of handling that and making sure we matched the intensity."

Wyoming quickly jumped to a 1-0 lead at 1:44 when Sydney Jones crossed the ball to Liz O'Reilly in front of Lamar goalie Bailey Fontenot and was able to deflect it past her for the goal.

The Cardinals tied it at one apiece at the 11:59 mark when Megan Campbell got behind the Cowgirl defense on a breakaway and put the ball past UW goalkeeper Courtney Merkle in the upper right corner.

Cowgirl forward Sara Paul pushed the score to 2-1 ten minutes later after taking a Lucie McDowell cross in front of LU keeper Fontenot and shooting it into the upper right corner.

Paul added another score in the second half (51:25)following a scramble in the Lamar box that left Cardinal goalkeeper Elizabeth Silas on the ground having collided with another Cowgirl and Paul kicked the loose ball in to increase the lead to 3-1.

Wyoming outshot Lamar 15 to eight and had seven shots on goal to the Cardinals' four. Merkle earned the win for the Cowgirls as she had three saves in a complete game.

Cowgirls Carmen Blume, Cassie Sheffield and Kristin Howard also registered shots on goal.

Wyoming returns to action Friday, Aug. 24 hosting Montana State-Billings before traveling to Weber State on Sunday. Kickoff with Montana State-Billings is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
