OGDEN, Utah - Looking to fine-tune all areas of the game, the Cowgirl soccer team turned in a solid defensive performance at Weber State to edge the Wildcats, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.

With the victory, Wyoming improves to 3-1 on the year while Weber State falls to 0-3.

"I thought we played with a lot of energy and fight, which made a huge difference for us," said Wyoming coach Pete Cuadrado. "Our defense was much more sharp today and took away their scoring opportunities. We played better overall so we're pleased with the win."

The Cowgirls' score came off a Weber State turnover as forward Sara Paul crossed the ball to sophomore Lucie McDowell, who took it at the top of the box and chipped it over Wildcat keeper Ryann Waldman for her first goal of the year.

Wyoming outshot the Wildcats, 10-8, including four shots on goal to WSU's three, using a balanced attack to register five shots in each half. With the ball in Wildcat territory for the majority of the game, Wyoming also tallied nine corner kicks to the Wildcats' five. Liz O'Reilly, Loren Mahoney, Sydney Jones and McDowell had two shots apiece, while freshman Mollee Ramsay and senior Carmen Blume each had one shot.

Cowgirl goalkeeper Carmen McDermott earned her first start of the year and her second win of the season as she had two saves on the day.

Wyoming continues the pre-conference season with home matches this weekend as the Cowgirls face Nebraska-Omaha Friday at 4 p.m. and Eastern Washington Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
