Soccer Loses Last Minute Heartbreaker To Colorado
Sept. 2, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Colorado 2, Wyoming 1 - Box Score
A last minute shot by the University of Colorado's Suzy Kiefer put the Buffs up 2-1 over the University of Wyoming Cowgirls with :54 seconds left to play, and would prove to be the game-winner.
The Cowgirls jumped out to the early lead in the game ten minutes in on a bullet sent by senior Sancy Florquist. Freshman Lindsey Vossbrink assisted the goal after a strong corner kick. The first period was a quick paced, well executed match that was paced entirely by the Cowgirls. Both teams played extremely aggressively, and two players received yellow-card cautions. Wyoming's Katie Groke at 15:26 and Colorado's Lindsey Galas at 27:44.
In the second half, CU stepped up and worked the ball hard. Wyoming was unable to keep control and gave up their first goal of the season to senior forward Suzy Kiefer at 56:29. The Cowgirls had to change their style of play, and the wear of such a fast game began to show. UW was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities despite taking six shots in the second half. Overall, CU out-shot Wyoming 14-11.
"CU put a lot of pressure on us in the back in the second half," Wyoming head coach Anne Moore said. "They forced us to make mistakes we hadn't been making in the first half. We got worn down, but we just have to learn how to play through it."
The Cowgirls split their opening weekend and now sit 1-1-0, as do the
Buffs. Wyoming plays their next two games on the road, first on Fri., Sept.
7 against the Crimson Tide of Alabama, and then on Sun., Sept. 9 at South
