Ranked Demon Deacons Too Much for Cowgirls Soccer
Sept. 3, 2006
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Freshman Emily Layton scored the lone goal for the Cowgirls late in the second half as the 21st ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated the Wyoming 3-1 at Spry Stadium on Sunday. With the loss the Cowgirls fall to 1-2-1 on the season.
"They are an extremely talented team," head coach Anne Moore said. "We were definitely fatigued from Friday's overtime game and Wake Forest had a lot of depth on their bench."
The Demon Deacons outshot the Cowgirls 24-4 and two of their three first half goals were scored by freshman Allie Sadow.
"The overtime game on Friday really affected the way we played, especially our defense. All four of our defensive girls played the entire game Friday and they got tired today."
Layton's goal, the first of her career, came on a breakaway in the 63rd minute to keep the Cowgirls from getting shutout against the ACC powerhouse.
Ashley Sheppard and Jamie Scarcliff split time in the net for the Cowgirls. Sheppard started the game and allowed all three Wake Forest goals while making five saves. Scarcliff went in to start the second half and made four saves without giving up a goal.
"Wake Forest is a very solid team and I expect them to move up in the ranks very quickly this year."
The Cowgirls will return to the friendly confines of the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex next weekend to host Miami of Ohio and Old Dominion. Friday's match with Miami will kickoff at 4 p.m. and Sunday's game against Old Dominion will begin at 11 a.m.
