Wyoming Soccer Ties South Alabama in Double Overtime
Sept. 9, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
After two overtime periods, the University of Wyoming Cowgirls ended their match with the University of South Alabama in a 1-1 tie, the first of the season for UW and only the third in the program's history.
Eight Cowgirls attempted to score, but UW's lone goal came from freshman Melissa Bowman at 38:06. This was the newcomer's first collegiate goal.
USA was visibly frustrated by the Cowgirls, and two players for the Jaguars were cited with yellow cards within five minutes of each other.
Wyoming looked like they may be able to pull off the win until South Alabama's Melissa Moeschl scored in the second period on a penalty kick at 61:00 that got past UW's goalie, Sarah Kuyper. Kuyper played the full 120 minutes of the long game, making eight saves.
At the end of regulation, the teams went into the first OT, but neither were able to produce a goal. The game ended in the Cowgirls' third tie in history after another scoreless period.
Wyoming will be back in action again on Fri., Sept. 14 when they face San
Francisco at Cowgirl Soccer Stadium. The Creighton Bluejays will also
invade, completing UW's short home stand over the weekend on Sun., Sept. 16.
