LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team beat Illinois State 1-0 Sunday morning to finish 2-0 at the 2004 La Quinta Mountain Classic, in Flagstaff, Ariz. With the win, the Cowgirls improved their overall record to 3-1-2.

Senior Mari Gomes scored the game winning goal at the 75:11 mark when she took a cross at the 18 yard box from junior Mercy Adetoye and beat the Illinois State keeper for the lone goal of the game. The goal is Gomes fifth of the year.

The Cowgirls held Illinois State scoreless for the remaining 15 minutes to pick up the 1-0 win.

Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard earned her first career win and shutout, making a career high 11 saves.

"It was a very good team effort, everyone contributed and our work ethic was great," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "It was a pretty tight game and both teams played very physical. Our defense held strong and Kara Walters and Kristen Stangl had great games in the middle. Ashley Sheppard had some great saves and Jessica Brown played really well and stepped up to fill in for an injured Sarah Skinner."

The Cowgirls will return to action next weekend when they travel to Boulder, Colo. to play in the Colorado Women's Soccer Classic. The Cowgirls will take on Denver next Friday and Louisiana State on Sunday. Friday's game is set for 2 p.m. and Sunday's game will kickoff at 11 a.m.
