Sept. 19, 2003
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team shut out Drake University 1-0 to improve its record to 4-3, Friday night in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Cowgirls scored the lone goal of the first half at the 28:43 mark when Christine Nagel took a corner kick and one of Drake's players miss handled it as it went into the back of their own net. The first half ended in a 1-0 Cowgirl lead. Drake out shot Wyoming 6-3 as Cowgirl goalkeeper Lori Scheider made two saves.
The second half was very physical and neither team could get much going on offensive. Drake continued to put pressure on the Cowgirl defense but Scheider stepped up and made three big saves to seal the win for Wyoming. Drake outshot Wyoming 6-3 in the second half and 12-6 in the match. Scheider finished with six saves.
"Overall we gave a great effort," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "It was a very physical game with a lot of fouls but I was really proud of the way we hung in there and came away with the win. Lori came up with some big saves, Angela (O'Dell) had a great game in the middle and Doreen (Thompson) played really well in her first career start."
The Cowgirl road trip continues Sunday afternoon as they
travel to Creighton University. The Jays are 3-2-2 thus far
in the season. Game time is set for 1 pm.
