Cowgirl Soccer Falls to UC Riverside 2-0
Sept. 26, 2003
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team was shutout by the University of California, Riverside 2-0 Friday evening at the UW Soccer Stadium.
The UC Riverside Highlanders needed little time to take advantage of the wind being at their back and scored the first goal of the game at the 3:56 mark. Kristi Tanaka took a free kick from about 40 yards out and Vanessa Chanez finished the lose ball to give the Highlanders an early 1-0 lead. The Highlanders continued to pressure the Cowgirl defense throughout the rest of the first half but were unable to convert any of its six shots. Lori Scheider recorded three saves in the half. The Cowgirl offense couldn't get much going as they traveled into the wind to pressure the Highlander goal. The Cowgirls were able to manage just one shot in the half as UC Riverside took a 1-0 advantage into the locker room.
The Cowgirl offense came to life in the second half tallying six shots from six different players. However, the lone goal of the half would be in the favor of the Highlanders. At the 74:46 mark, Vanessa Chanez scored her second goal of the game, this time on an assist from Linda Allen. Wyoming could not find an answer and the game ended in a 2-0 UC Riverside win. Scheider came away with four second half saves for a total of seven.
"It was a hard fought game. They are a big and physical
team and we stepped up and played hard," said UW head
coach Anne Moore. "We kind of got pinned at our end with
the wind in the first half and had trouble getting the ball
up the field. In the second half, we didn't do a very
good job of finding our players feet and we kept playing the
ball right to them. Overall, I didn't think we got as
much going offensively as we could have.
"We had a great week of practice leading in to today and it is very disappointing to lose like this. We need to work on getting back to the basics next week and come back ready to play and come away with a couple of wins next weekend."
The Cowgirls will have the rest of this weekend off before they travel to the state of Washington for a pair of games next weekend. The Cowgirls will face Gonzaga Friday afternoon and Eastern Washington Sunday. Friday's match is set to begin at 3 pm while kickoff is set for 11:30 am on Sunday.
