Oct. 12, 2003
Laramie, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team improved its MWC record to 2-0 with a 3-1 win over San Diego State University, Sunday afternoon at the UW Soccer Stadium.
The Cowgirls got an early lead when sophomore Mercy Adetoye scored her second goal of the season in the 39th minute. She scored from the top of the 18 yard box when freshman Chelsey Anderson found her with a crisp pass. The goal was the only score of the half and the Cowgirls went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs battled back and knotted the game at one, when Courtney Burns scored, five minutes into the second half. Becky Prilaman and Erica Lopez assisted on the goal. The Cowgirls answered quickly as red shirt freshman Kristen Stangl scored her first career goal from about 50 yards out on a free kick to put Wyoming up 2-1.
In the 70th minute, Adetoye sealed the Cowgirl win with a breakaway goal, her second of the game. Stangl recorded her first career assist on the goal.
"Offensively we were able to create some great opportunities and Mercy really punished them with her speed," said UW head coach Anne Moore.
Wyoming goalkeeper Lori Scheider made eleven saves in the game including a couple of big diving saves late in the match.
"San Diego State has a great team and had some very
dangerous opportunities," said Moore. "Lori came up big
in the box and our defense held strong.
"The overall team effort and excitement is just amazing. After all of the times we have come so close in the past couple of years it is really nice to be on the winning end. It is just a wonderful feeling to be 2-0 after the first week of conference play."
The Cowgirls, now 7-6 overall, are off to their best conference start in the programs eight year history. Prior to this season, the Cowgirls had never won more than one conference match in a given season.
The Cowgirls will play two MWC matches next weekend against New Mexico and Air Force. They will travel to New Mexico for a Friday night match and will host the Air Force Falcons Sunday afternoon. Start time in Albuquerque is set for 7 pm and action will get under way at 1 pm Sunday in Laramie.
"We can't be satisfied," said Moore. "That's just two down and we have two more big ones coming up this weekend. We need to put forth the same intensity for all of our conference games and hopefully we can continue to improve."
