LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Cowgirl Soccer team was unable to hold onto their early lead on Sunday as they were defeated by the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels, 2-1 in overtime.
Junior transfer Tuva Gulbrandsen scored the only goal for Wyoming 28 minutes into the first half off a diagonal cross from sophomore Lindsey Vossbrink. The Cowgirls scored on their only shot of the half to take the lead into the lockerroom.
"The first half was pretty good," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "We played really well."
UNLV tied the game up at the 66:10 mark into the match-up when freshman Nickie Olson scored off a pass from junior Rachael Buscovich. Wyoming took only two shots in the second half and were unable to score on either opportunity, sending the game into overtime.
The Rebels took little time to score the winning goal as freshman Michelle Cowles scored off a cross from sophomore Annii Magliulo only 1:41 into overtime.
Both teams played an aggressive game as Wyoming committed 20 fouls and UNLV was called for 17.
"We played really hard but the second half just turned into a lot of fouls for both teams," said Moore. "It was a very physical game, and it just didn't go our way. We fought hard, but UNLV came out on top."
Junior goalkeeper Lori Scheider continued to show her athleticism saving six shots during the outing despite an injury in the second half.
The Cowgirls have now lost four straight and are currently 4-10-1 overall
(0-4-0 MWC). UNLV improves to 10-4-1 on the season (2-1-0 MWC) with the
win. Wyoming will complete their final game of the current three-game road
trip in Colorado Springs, Colo., when they take on Colorado College on
Thurs., Oct. 24. The Tigers are 6-6-1 on the season.
