Lobos Grab Win in Final Moments
Oct. 21, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A goal by New Mexico's Stephanie Rowe with 1:08 left in the game provided the Lobos a 2-1 victory over the Cowgirl soccer team Sunday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque, N.M.
Shortly following a Wyoming attack in which Kristin Howard's header was saved by UNM goalie Kelli Cornell, the Lobos raced down the field where Rachel Montoya crossed the ball to Rowe deep into Cowgirl territory and Rowe headed it into the back corner for her third game-winning goal of the year.
With the loss, Wyoming falls to 7-8-2 overall and 0-5-1 in MW play while the Lobos improve to 10-5-2, 4-1-1 in conference.
Forward Olivia Mohtadi scored early for the Cowgirls at the 24:34 mark to give a 1-0 lead for Wyoming going into the half. The Calgary, Alberta, native stole the ball in the Lobo box following a possession and earned a breakaway goal shooting from the left wing. UNM's Cornell had only allowed 14 goals prior to Sunday's match, third-best in the MW, and had a goals-against average of .900 with three shutouts.
Wyoming was outshot 14-2 in the opening half, but keeper Courtney Merkle earned four saves to keep the ball out of the net. New Mexico finished the game with 23 total shots, but the Cowgirls kept it close in the second half with eight shots to UNM's nine.
The Lobos tied the score at 1-1 when forward Rachel Montoya took a pass from Jordan Craig and shot from the far right wing. Merkle got a hand on it but it slipped past her and into the net to knot the score at the 69:51 mark.
UNM's Cornell earned the win on two saves to improve her goalie record to 10-5-2, while Merkle fell to 3-6-2 despite five saves in the game.
The Cowgirls finish the regular season at home for Senior Day this Friday against Air Force at 4 p.m. The MW Tournament is slated for Oct. 31-Nov.4 in San Diego.
