Cowgirl Soccer Falls to Utah 2-0
Oct. 23, 2004
Laramie, Wyo. -- The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team gave up two first half goals and were never able to rebound as they fell to Utah 2-0, Saturday afternoon at the UW Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowgirls fall to 9-5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Mountain West Conference. Utah improves to 11-4-2 and 3-1-1 in MWC play.
Despite playing a very good first half, the Cowgirls gave up the first goal of the game to Hailey Marsh as she scored on a Whitney Dorsey corner kick at the 27:24 mark. The Utes then went up 2-0, as the Cowgirls scored on their own goal when a pass intended for UW goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard found the back of the UW net. The goal came at the 31:48 mark. After a very physical first half, the Utes took a 2-0 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
Despite outshooting Utah 11-5 in the second half, the Cowgirls were unable to convert on any of their shots and the game ended in a 2-0 win for Utah.
Sheppard shouldered the loss in the Cowgirl net, making five saves. Ashley Mason picked up the win in the Utah goal making nine saves.
"I thought we played well enough to win but things just didn't fall our way," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "The first half was a real battle between both teams. I thought we did a better job of putting the ball on the ground in the second half and also did a better job of playing our game.
"We created more opportunities offensively today but we couldn't find a way to finish. Today was a very frustrating loss for everybody."
The Cowgirls will close out the regular season next Saturday as they host New Mexico. The game is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the UW Soccer Stadium and will be senior day for six Cowgirl Seniors. Melissa Bowman, Darci Ferrell, Mari Gomes, Meghan Racette, Sarah Skinner and Lindsey Vossbrink will all play in their final soccer match as Cowgirls in Laramie.
