After playing 84 minutes of scoreless soccer with the 23rd ranked team in the nation, the Cowgirls surrendered a single goal and suffered a tough 1-0 loss to BYU, Thursday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.

With the loss, the Cowgirls fall to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in the Mountain West Conference while BYU improves to 13-2-2 overall and 3-2 in conference matches.

The game winning goal came at the 84:18 mark off of the foot of BYU's Kassidy Christensen. After a blocked shot by the UW defense, Christensen picked up the rebound and scored from the top of the 18-yard box to give the Cougars the win.

"It is unfortunate to lose with just five minutes left after battling as hard as we did today," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "I thought we played well against a tough team. They were just able to put the ball in the back of the net."

After a very even, back and forth first half of soccer, the Cowgirls and Cougars went into the halftime break knotted in a 0-0 tie. BYU took seven shots to the Cowgirls' six in the first half as both teams had good scoring opportunities.

However, the second half was a different story as BYU outshot the Cowgirls 19-4. The Cowgirls did have a couple of great scoring opportunities that were squelched by the BYU defense. The best of those came with 35:21 remaining in the game when junior Tamika Wilson blasted a beautiful shot from the right side of the box and BYU goalkeeper Erika Woodbury made a diving save to her right.

UW goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard suffered today's loss despite a very solid day in net. She made 11 saves, which is the second most in a single game in the MWC this season.

The Cowgirls now have two days to prepare for the MWC Leading UNLV Rebels who travel to Laramie for a key match on Sunday. The game will begin at 1 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
