Fall Training Begins For Cowgirl Soccer

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Coming off its most successful season in program history, the Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team began its fall training camp, on Wednesday with its first two practices. First-year head coach Pete Cuadrado will lead his Cowgirls in 11 practices before playing their first exhibition game of the season at Denver on Saturday, Aug. 11.
"We are excited to get going," Cuadrado said. "We have a good group this season and now we just need to get on the field and prove it."
The Cowgirls welcome back 17 letterwinners from the 2011 Mountain West Tournament runner-up team. They also have nine of 11 starters returning from that team including reigning MW Freshman of the Year Sara Paul. Also returning as starters for Cowgirl soccer are goal keeper Courtney Merkle, midfielders Liz O'Reilly and Lucie McDowell, forwards Sara Paul and Carmen Blume as well as defenders Jenny Johnson, Ashlyn Mazur, Sydney Jones and Loren Mahoney. UW also welcomes five newcomers to the squad including four freshmen and one transfer.
"There is going to be a lot of competition within our own team this season," Cuadrado said. "We are really deep with talent at every position."
Wyoming soccer will begin its exhibition season on Saturday, Aug. 11 at Denver. They will host one exhibition game versus Colorado School of Mines on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 4:30 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Soccer pitch. The first regular season game for UW will be the following Friday, Aug. 17 at 4:30 p.m. against Montana at the Madrid Soccer pitch.
