The Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer team (6-6 overall) will open up MWC action on Saturday, Oct. 2 against the No. 12 ranked BYU Cougars (9-1-1 overall).

"We are very excited to get into conference play," Cowgirl head coach Danny Sanchez said. "BYU has been the class of the MWC the last two years and we know this will be a huge challenge for us."

This will be the toughest test to date for Wyoming on the season, playing the No. 12-ranked Cougars. For the second time in as many seasons, the Cowgirls will battle a top-15 ranked Brigham Young team. Last season when UW and BYU met, the Cougars were ranked No. 9 in the nation.

Leading Wyoming in scoring through the non-conference season, are sophomores Jenny Johnson and Carmen Blume, as well as freshman Nahiomy Ortiz, all with three goals. Both Ortiz and Johnson have scored two game-winning goals on the season. One more will put them into a tie for third place in the Cowgirl single season records. Freshman forward Liz O'Reilly has assisted on five of the 16 Cowgirl goals, which puts her in a tie for third place in the single season assists records. The Cowgirls have outshot their opponents 170 to 130, while putting 89 on goal.

The Cowgirls will be wearing pink on Saturday to support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and will receive free admission into the game for wearing pink.

The Cougars lead the all-time series with the Cowgirls, 14-1. Last season BYU defeated UW 2-0 in Provo, Utah. Wyoming last defeated Brigham Young in Laramie on Oct. 21, 2004, 3-2 in overtime.

Wyoming and Brigham Young will meet on the pitch at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex at 1 p.m. Saturday.
