LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team will take on Utah in the first round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championships this Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the South Field of the BYU Campus in Provo, Utah.

The Cowgirls finished 3-3 in MWC play earning a fifth place seed in the championships and a first round game against the Utes, who finished 3-2-1 in MWC play and earned the fourth seed. The Cowgirls are currently 9-6-4 overall while the Utes are 11-5-2.

Earlier this season, the Utes beat the Cowgirls 2-0 in Laramie on Oct. 23. The Cowgirls surrendered two early goals and were never able to rebound as the Utes beat the Cowgirls for the 11th consecutive time. The Cowgirls have never beaten Utah on the soccer field.

The Cowgirls played the Utes extremely tough but gave up a goal on a corner kick in the 27th minute and another less than five minutes later on an own goal and could never regain the momentum. The Cowgirls outshot the Utes 18-11 in the game.

Offensively, the Cowgirls are led by senior Mari Gomes and junior Mercy Adetoye. Gomes leads the team in goals with eight and has added a pair of assists. Adetoye has scored seven goals and added a team high seven assists. Freshman Ashley Sheppard has seen the majority of time in the Cowgirl net while making 98 saves. She has allowed just 1.27 goals a game and has recorded four shutouts.

Ashley Mason has played fifteen games in the Utah goal, making 58 saves and allowing just 1.01 goals a game. Both Amanda Feigt and Chelsea Card lead the Utes on offense with five goals a piece.
