LUBBOCK, Texas -
The Cowgirl tennis team (1-1 overall) won their first match of the spring season with a 4-3 victory over Texas State, on Sunday, in Lubbock.
"I've been telling our fans and the team all year we think this team had a toughness factor that is hard to teach," said head coach Dean Clower. "If you look at the match today, we won for the simple fact that we were tough. After being down most of the way and fighting back the way we did was special. We've had a good start to the season but must progress further in many aspects of the game."
Texas State struck first by taking two out of three doubles matches to go up 1-0. Jessica Kahts and Ana Gutierrez opened up the day with a 6-3 win over Veronica Popovici and Dorottya Jonas. The Bobcats clinched the point as Katy Collins and Eva Dench defeated Christa Gecheva and Alma Espinosa by the same score, 6-3. Jessica Parizher and Alena Vasileva were tied at 4-4 and did not finish.
In singles action, three matches needed three sets to determine a winner. The Bobcats pulled ahead 2-0 as Kahts won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, over Popovici at the number one singles spot. Jonas earned the first point of the day for Wyoming as she won in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9). She was followed by Silviya Zhelyazkova with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Pippa Carr. Parizher showed some grit as she lost in the first set 6-4 but rallied back to win 6-3, 1-0 (16-14) over Monica Pieratt. The match would be taken by the Cowgirls as Gecheva defeated Collins, 6-3, 6-3, at the fourth position. The other Cowgirl in action was Espinosa who fell to Eva Dench, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).
