Cowgirl Tennis Opens Up Spring Play with Loss to Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team (0-1 overall) opened up the spring season with a 7-0 loss against the Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-0 overall), on Friday afternoon in Lincoln.
"We competed well this afternoon," said UW head coach Kati Gyulai. "Nebraska is a solid performer and a tough opponent to open the season. We look to carry on this energy to tomorrow and to get a couple of wins."
In doubles play, Nebraska took both matches to earn the team point. The team of Jana Albers and Wiveca Swarting defeated Rebecca Berger and Sarah Summerfield, 8-4, while Stephanie Evans and Maria Ring earned an 8-5 victory over Jamie Nelson and Carly Van Hollen.
In singles play, the Cornhuskers swept all five matches. Swarting defeated Summerfield 7-5, 6-3, while Mary Weatherhold earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Berger. At the number three spot, Van Hollen fell, 6-1, 6-4, against Albers, as did Nelson, 6-2, 6-3 against Evans. To close things out Ashley Finnegan defeated Carolina Chaix in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Wyoming will continue their weekend tomorrow against the Creighton Bluejays and the Drake Bulldogs, on Saturday, Feb. 7. The first match is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by the Drake match at 3:00 p.m.
