Cowgirl Tennis Comes Up Short Against Lumberjacks
Feb. 11, 2007
LAS CRUCES, N.M. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team dropped to 3-3 overall on the season after a close 4-3 loss against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, on Sunday morning, in Las Cruces, N.M.
"I thought this match was going to come down to the doubles point and unfortunately we couldn't pull it out," said UW head coach Kristen Hall. "Overall, I was pleased with our play this weekend and this should really give us some things to work on for our next couple of matches."
In doubles play, the Lumberjacks got the early jump as they won two out of three matches to take the doubles point. The number two UW team of Michelle Brown and Sarah Summerfield defeated Patrice Biemold and Susan McClelland, 9-7. Leslie Vial and Katie Schurr defeated Cowgirls Andrea House and Karolina Rowinski 8-4, while the team of Georgie Mills and Paij Porter earned the win over Wyoming's Carolina Chaix and Jamie Nelson, 8-4.
The Cowgirls couldn't win enough singles matches to earn the victory as they took away wins at the number one, two and four spots. Summerfield defeated Biemold in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. At number two singles, Rowinski earned a hard fought three set victory, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0, against Schurr, while House defeated McClelland, 6-4, 7-5. Northern Arizona pulled out victories at the number three, five and six spots to earn the 4-3 victory. Vial earned a straight set win, 6-2, 6-1, over Brown, while Porter defeated Nelson, 6-4, 6-1. Stacey Pinchbeck closed things out with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Chaix at the sixth position.
The Cowgirls will resume play on Friday, March 2, as they take on the Idaho Vandals in Pullman, Wash.
