LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Another nationally ranked team defeated the University of Wyoming women's tennis team, 6-1 today in Lincoln, Neb. The Huskers are currently ranked 54th in the nation and gave the Cowgirls excellent competition and experience. The Cowgirls dropped to 0-3 for the spring season while the Huskers improved to 4-1.
In No. 1 singles, Jenny Bowman lost her first match of the season to the fourteenth ranked player in the Central Region, Katalina Balan, 6-2, 6-4. Bowman is now 2-1 for the season.
Yuliani Santi brought the Cowgirls their only singles win in the Number 2 position with a great match against Amy Frisch. In three sets, Santi won in spectacular fashion after a tiebreak game, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7.
The Cowgirls only other win came in doubles action where Bowman and partner Jennifer Hancock defeated the eighth ranked pair in the Central Region, Balan and Frisch, 8-6.
"We're playing as hard as we can against teams that are frankly better than us," head tennis coach Pam Wildt said after the match. "This will only help us take steps forward when we play teams that aren't ranked. We're competing well right now individually, and gaining confidence for teams down the road."
Wyoming heads to Creighton tomorrow to take on the unranked Bluejays for a match set to start at 6 p.m.
