LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team moved to 4-3 overall this spring with a 4-2 victory over the Montana State Lady Cats, on Friday, in Laramie.
"I was really happy with the way we played today," said UW head coach Krissy Hall. "It was a great win to start off play at home in front of our fans. I was especially pleased with the play of Brittany DeFelice. She really battled through a tough three set match, which ultimately gave us the match."
The teams started in singles play and the Cowgirls would take four out of six matches. At the number two spot, UW freshman Rebecca Berger earned a straight set win, 6-2, 6-2, over Nuria Hernandez, as did Wyoming's Michelle Brown over Katy Proietti, 6-2, 6-2. Cowgirl Sarah Summerfield defeated Ali Griffin, 6-4, 6-4 at the number five spot, while it was Wyoming freshman Brittany DeFelice who would pull out her match against Allison Fey in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Stephanie Jasper earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over UW senior Corina Lazar at the top spot and Laura Villegas also won her match, 6-1, 6-1, against Cowgirl Carly Van Hollen.
In doubles play, the Cowgirls would win at the number one spot with the team of Berger and Lazar defeating Proietti and Jasper, 8-6. Brown and Van Hollen were up 4-0 on Griffin and Villegas before it was determined that Wyoming had won the match. DeFelice and Jamie Nelson did not play their doubles match.
