Cowgirl Tennis Comes Up Short against Vandals
March 2, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team (3-4 overall) opened up the weekend with a tough 4-3 loss against the Idaho Vandals, on Friday night, in Pullman, Wash.
"We had an opportunity to win this match and we didn't take advantage of it," said UW head coach Krissy Hall. "We fell behind in doubles and just couldn't make it up enough in singles to pull out the match. We will just have to re-group for our match tomorrow against Eastern Washington."
In doubles play, the Vandals got the early jump as they won two out of three matches to take the doubles point. The number three team of Jamie Nelson and Sarah Summerfield defeated Laura Leoni and Lauren Shrubb, 8-6, in the only win for the Cowgirls. Patricia Ruman and Mariel Tinnirello defeated UW's Andrea House and Karolina Rowinski, 8-6, while the team of Efrat Leopold and Lauren Drew earned the win over Wyoming's Corina Lazar and Amy Senko, 8-5.
The Cowgirls would fall short in singles play as they earned victories at the number two, four and five spots. Rowinski came back after falling in the first set and defeated her opponent Tinnirello, 0-6, 6-1, 6-1. Senko earned a two set win, 6-4, 6-2, over Drew, as did House over Kasie King, 6-1, 6-2. Idaho's Ruman defeated Summerfield in a tough three set match, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, while the Vandals closed it out with wins at the number three and six positions.
The Cowgirls will continue play tomorrow against the Eastern Washington Eagles beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Pullman, Wash.
