SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -
After moving back into the ITA Tennis rankings this week, the 60th ranked Wyoming tennis team struggled in a 6-1 loss against the 74th ranked Utah Utes, on Tuesday afternoon. They are now 5-5 overall this spring.
"It was a tough battle today," said head coach Dean Clower. "We need to get stronger on the big points in both singles and doubles. We gave ourselves opportunities but against good teams you don't get second chances. We will take tonight to recover but will be back to work tomorrow."
The Cowgirls had a tough time in doubles action for the second match in a row as the Utes won two of three matches. Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova fell to the 17th ranked team of Paige Miles and Tereza Bekerova, 8-4. In the next match, the only team to win on the day was Sasa Nemcova and Alexandra Kovacs who defeated Elena Najera-Salas and Natasha Smith, 8-5. Utah claimed the first point of the day as Callie Craig and Sarah Pham beat Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova, 8-3.
The Utes would dominate in singles action by taking five of the six matches. Miles won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, over Christa Gecheva followed by 79th ranked Bekerova over Popovici, 6-4, 6-1, to give Utah a 3-0 lead. Sasa Nemcova won the only point of the day for the Cowgirls in singles as she defeated Smith, 6-4, 6-4. Lucia Kovarcikova clinched the match for the Utes with her 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Parizher. In the other two singles matches, Craig won 7-5, 6-3 over Kovacs and Pham was victorious against Synkova, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
The Cowgirls return to action on Saturday, March 16, as they open up conference play. They will host the Air Force Falcons in the UW Indoor Tennis Complex at 2:00 p.m.
