Wyoming Tennis Falls 5-2 against Anteaters

The Cowgirl tennis team closed out a three-match road swing with a tough 5-2 loss against the UC Irvine Anteaters, on Saturday afternoon. Wyoming is now 5-6 overall this spring.
"We took major steps forward as a team this week," said head coach Dean Clower. "As a coaching staff, we are very pleased with how far we have come but know there's a little bit more in us. We have worked out a lot of things in order to be ready for conference. The team will get a well-deserved day off tomorrow and be back to the grind on Monday."
UC Irvine went up 1-0 early in the match by winning two of three matches in doubles action. Sarah Gong and Brooke Schewyer beat Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva, 8-4, while Ali Facey and Franziska Goettsching defeated Dorottya Jonas and Veronica Popovici, 8-6. At the third position, Alena Vasileva and Silviya Zhelyazkova won their match over Kat Facey and Sarah Stadfelt, 8-6.
In singles action, UW hung tough winning two matches and going three sets in four matches. Popovici earned the first point of the day for the Cowgirls with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sarah Gong. Kat Facey gave the Anteaters a 2-1 lead with a two set win, 7-6, 6-1, over Zehlyazkova followed by Ali Facey with a tough three set victory, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, over Gecheva. UCI clinched the match with Schweyer needing three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, over Espinosa. Jonas won the second point of the day for the Cowgirls, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, over Mamiit, while Stadfelt defeated Vasileva, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Saturday, March 29, against the Tulane Green Wave. The match is set for 10:00 a.m. in Boulder, Colo.
