March 29, 2014
BOULDER, Colo. -
The Cowgirl tennis team wrapped up non-conference play with an impressive 4-0 victory over the Tulane Green Wave, on Saturday afternoon, in Boulder. Wyoming runs their record to 6-6 overall.
"This was a good way to finish out our non-conference schedule," said head coach Dean Clower. "The players have been working very hard and have improved tremendously over the past six weeks. We will take a couple days to get healthy and be ready for the conference part of our season."
UW took a 1-0 lead by taking two out of three matches. Alena Vasileva and Silviya Zhelyazkova won by default, while Dorottya Jonas and Veronica Popovici earned the point with an 8-3 win over Jacqui Katz and Ipek Birol. Christa Gecheva and Alma Espinosa were up 5-3 on Meredith Maltby and Emily Dvorak but didn't finish.
In singles action, the Cowgirls only needed three matches to clinch the point. At the sixth position, Espinosa won by default to put Wyoming up 2-0. Vasileva defeated Dvorak, 6-2, 6-1, while Gecheva beat Margaux Hyman, 6-1, 6-4, to give Wyoming the 4-0 victory.
Three matches were played but not completed. Popovici was up 6-2, 4-1, against Birol, while Jonas won the first set, 6-4, over Katz. Zhelyazkova fell in the first set, 6-3, against Maltby.
The Cowgirls will begin Mountain West play on the road this weekend. UW will play Air Force, on Friday, April 4, in Colorado Springs and New Mexico, on Sunday, April 6.
