Cowgirl Tennis Opens Up Conference Play With Loss

The 68th ranked Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team (10-4 overall, 0-1 in MWC) opened up the 2011 Mountain West Conference season with a disappointing 4-3 loss against the 47th ranked San Diego State Aztecs (10-6 overall, 1-0 in MWC).
"We battled to the last point in singles," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "It is disappointing to lose 4-3 but we know that with some tactical adjustments we can win this match. Now we have to get back up and put up a fight tomorrow against UNLV."
San Diego State got the day going by winning all three doubles matches. Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel fell to the 51st ranked Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison, 8-7, while Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs were defeated by the 74th ranked Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais, 8-5. The Aztecs wrapped it up with Emma Cioffi and Julia Trunk earning an 8-3 victory over Veronica Popovici and Carly Van Hollen.
It went down to the wire in singles play as the Cowgirls won at the number one, two and six positions. Veronica Popovici defeated Julia Trunk in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. It also took Alexandra Kovacs three sets as she defeated Julia Wais, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. The other Cowgirl to come away with a win was Sasa Nemcova over Olivia Colman, 6-3, 6-2.
Wyoming will conclude the week on Friday, April 1 as they face the 52nd ranked UNLV Lady Rebels. The match is set for 11:00 a.m. Mountain Time.
