April 2, 2005
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team won their first MWC match of the season with a 6-1 victory over the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Saturday morning, in Laramie. They now move to 8-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while Air Force drops is 8-10 overall and 0-3 in the MWC.
In doubles play, the Cowgirls struggled a bit as the Falcons took two out three to win the point. The only Cowgirl team to win was Patricia Chien and Karolina Rowinski over Kat Bushey and Karissa Walker, 8-3. Erika Shortridge and Lauren Wilson defeated Corina Lazar and Amy Senko, 8-4, and Andrea House and Gwen Moser fell to Liza Vaccaro and Kelly Morgan, 8-6.
It was different in singles play as Wyoming swept all six matches led by Patricia Chien at the number one spot. She earned a three set victory, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0, against Kat Bushey. Freshman Corina Lazar won her match in straight sets, 7-6 (7), 6-2, over Karissa Walker, while Karolina Rowinkski had an easy time, 6-4, 6-1, against Lauren Wilson. At the number four spot, Kim Romero came back from a first set loss to defeat Katie Tomkie, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. The Cowgirls wrapped things up with an Andrea House two set win, 6-0, 6-0, over Liza Vaccaro and Amy Senko winning 6-4, 6-4 against Miclynn Crail.
"I thought we had a few unforced errors in doubles play, but we more than made up for it in singles," said head coach Pam Wildt. "They jumped out quickly in every match and weren't going to let this one slip away. The team overall did a really great job today and really believed that they could win. I also thought Patricia Chien had a nice day at the number one position with a solid win."
Wyoming will close out the weekend with a match against the New Mexico Lobos, on Sunday morning, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
