April 13, 2014
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Cowgirl tennis team improved their conference record to 3-1 overall with a 5-2 win over the Utah State Aggies, on Sunday afternoon, in Laramie. UW is now 9-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Aggies drop to 13-9 overall and 1-5 in MW action.
"The players grinded out another win for us today," said head coach Dean Clower. "We didn't play great in doubles but rebounded with solid singles play. Veronica (Popovici) had a huge win on senior day against one of the best players in the conference. Thanks again to all the fans that make this the toughest place to play for opposing teams."
In doubles play, it went down to the final match to see who earned the first point of the day. Christa Gecheva and Alma Espinosa won easily over Amber Stuhlman and Katie Sweet, 8-1, while Dorottya Jonas and Veronica Popovici fell short 8-3 against McKenzie Davis and Kallie Sperry. Alena Vasileva and Silviya Zhelyazkova seemed to have the upper hand in their match up 7-4, but fell 8-7 (6) in the tiebreaker.
Down 1-0, the Cowgirls rallied back in singles action as they took five out of the six matches to come away with the victory. Popovici needed three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in her win over Davis, while Jonas won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, against Sperry at the number two position. Utah State won their second point of the day as Guensler beat Zhelyazkova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. UW hung tough and won the final three matches on the day. Espinosa defeated Cassidy Branstine, 6-4, 6-3, while Gecheva and Vasileva each swept their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.
The Cowgirls will close out the conference season Saturday, April 19 against the Colorado State Rams. The match is set for 2:00 p.m. in Ft. Collins.
