Wyoming Tennis Earns Victory over 75th ranked Aztecs

San Diego, Calif. (April 16, 2010) - The University of Wyoming Tennis team (12-6 overall, 3-2 MWC) pulled out a tough 4-3 victory over the 75th ranked San Diego State Aztecs (10-10 overall, 3-4 MWC) on Friday afternoon in San Diego.
"We fought very hard today," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We were down in doubles 6-3 and hung in there to come back and win it in a tie-breaker which put us up 1-0. At that point, we truly believed that we could win and we played liked it. We are extremely happy about this victory."
It would be a battle from the beginning in doubles play. The team of Alexandra Kovacs and Rebecca Berger started things off for the Cowgirls with an 8-2 win over Julia Trunk and Julia Wais, 8-2, while Paloma Navarro and Sarah Summerfield struggled with an 8-2 loss against Alicia Aguilar and Olivia Colman. It came down to the number one team of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel. They would fall behind 6-3 in their doubles match to Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison, but battled all the way back to pull out the 9-8 (1) win to help Wyoming clinch the doubles point.
It was action packed in the singles matches as well as it went down to the final match to see who would come away with the win. At the number one position, Summerfield had a tough day against the 56th ranked Trunk with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat, but van Ginkel won the first singles match of the day for the Cowgirls with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sierra Ellison. The Aztecs Emma Cioffi would tie it up for the Aztecs, 2-2, with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Nemcova, and they would pull ahead as the 91st ranked Aguilar earned a straight set win, 7-5, 6-3, against Kovacs. Wyoming's Berger would even it back up with her 6-4, 7-6 (6) victory over Roxanne Ellison. The final match of the day had Simona Synkova and Julia Wais squaring off at the third position. Wais took the first set 6-4, but Synkova held tough and won the next two 6-4, 6-3. She would come away with the 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win to give the Cowgirls the 4-3 victory.
Today's action saw the Cowgirls pick up their first ever victory over the Aztecs in 12 tries. Wyoming also set the school record for wins in a single season with 12 and their three conference wins is the most since they joined the MWC.
The Cowgirl's will continue conference action will continue next Friday and Saturday, with a trip to San Diego, Calif. to take on San Diego State and UNLV.
