Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis Ends Regular Season With A Victory

Laramie, Wyo. - In its final regular-season match of the season, the Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team earned a 7-0 sweep over the Montana State Lady Bobcats, Friday morning, at the UW Tennis Complex. With the win, the Cowgirls improved to 8-13 overall, while the Lady Cats fall to 4-13 overall.
Wyoming took the doubles point as two of three Cowgirl duos came away with victories. The team of Yuliani Santi and Jennifer Hancock defeated Laurel Brown and Tyffani Thomas, 8-3, while at the No. 2 spot Patricia Chien and Kati Gyulai has an easy time with their match by earning an 8-1 victory over Susan Risteen and Vera Vasilova. Unfortunately the team of Gwen Moser and Megan Williams fell short in their bid, 8-4, to the team of Staci Rust and Stacy Voelker.
Singles play was also dominated by Wyoming led by junior Yuliani Santi in the No. 1 spot with her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Stacy Voelker. Freshman Patricia Chien was victorious in her match against Vera Vasilova, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 slot. In her final match in front of the home crowd, senior Kati Gyulai earned a victory after her opponent Susan Risteen retired, while junior Jennifer Hancock battled Laurel Brown 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) to come away with a win. The Cowgirls closed out singles play with Megan Williams defeating Tyffani Thomas, 7-5, 6-2, and Gwen Moser earning a straight set victory, 6-1, 6-1, over Staci Rust.
"It was really a great way to close out the season," said head coach Pam Wildt. "Considering the conditions being cold and windy, the girls had a great performance. They came out very aggressive, jumped out early in each match and sealed the victory. This is really a great win for us heading into the conference championships next week."
The Cowgirls will wrap up their season this week at the MWC Championships, April 24-26, in San Diego, Calif. They will open up on Thursday against the #1 seed UNLV Lady Rebels at 11:00 a.m. MT.
