Wyoming Tennis Wins Quarterfinal Match Against Air Force

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
In the quarterfinal round of the 2012 MWC Tennis Championships, the Wyoming Tennis team (14-8 overall, 5-2 MWC) earned an impressive 4-0 victory over the Air Force Academy Falcons (17-8 overall, 3-4 MWC), on Thursday morning in San Diego. It's the second year in a row that the Cowgirls are advancing to the semifinals of the tournament.
"The team came into today's match very focused," said head coach Dean Clower. "We played well in all of the lines and took care of business early. We look forward to a light day tomorrow and a rematch with TCU on Saturday."
Wyoming started off things on a high note as they would win the two of three double matches to take the first point of the day. Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova finished first with a dominating 8-1 victory over Christine Molina and Tiffany Tran. The 51st ranked team of Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova notched the point with an 8-6 win over Tahlia Smoke and Melissa Cecil. Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova were all tied up at five against Hannah Dake and Natasha Rizvi and did not finish.
It was a solid showing in singles action with the Cowgirls needing three victories to seal the win. Wyoming's Popovici won the first match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, over Melissa Cecil. That was followed by Kovacs beating Smoke, 6-3, 6-4, while they clinched the match with a Synkova win, 6-1, 6-4, against Molina. There were three matches still in action but didn't finish. Nemcova won the first set, 6-2, and was tied 3-3 in the second with Tiffany Tran. Parizher also won her first set, 7-5, but was down 3-2, againt Dake while Zhelyazkova lost the first set 6-3 to Rizvi but was up 5-2 in the second before the match was called.
The Cowgirls will now move onto the semifinals and face the top seed TCU Horned Frogs. The match is set for Saturday, April 28, at 3:00 p.m.
