Cowgirl Tennis Continues Play at WSU Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. -

The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team continued fall play at the Cougar Classic, on Friday and Saturday, in Pullman, Wash.

On Friday in singles play, the Cowgirls started off strong as they won eight of their 11 matches played on the day. Freshman Carly Van Hollen lost her opening set 7-5 to Audree Jenks of Portland but came back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4, then followed by a straight set win, 6-4, 6-0, against Clare Dodge of Gonzaga. In flight three singles, sophomore Carolina Chaix earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nicole Fleckenstein of Portland, while defeating Judy Liening (Eastern Washington), 6-0, 6-2, in her second match of the day. Senior Michelle Brown had a first round bye and then faced Katie Colton of Gonzaga. She earned a 6-0, 6-0 win in her only match of the day. Other wins on the day came from Corina Lazar who won her opening match against Irimesui of Idaho in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, but fell to Biana Jochimsen of Boise State, 7-6, 1-6, 7-5. Junior Jamie Nelson defeated Jana Siwa of Idaho, 6-2, 6-3, unfortunately she lost a tough three set match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, against Aleksandra Stefanova of Washington State. Closing out singles play Rebecca Berger fell to Bianca Selaru (Washington State, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, but came back with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Amanda Bran of Montana.

Friday was a tough day for the Cowgirls in doubles play as all three teams lost in the opening round. The team of Rebecca Berger and Carly Van Hollen were defeated by Amanda and Rebecca Bran of Montana, 8-3. Michelle Brown and Corina Lazar fell to Emily Anderson and Aglaya Kokurin (Gonzaga), 8-6 as did Carolina Chaix and Jamie Nelson, 8-6 to Rika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer of Gonzaga, 8-6.

 

 

"I was very impressed with our singles play," said UW head coach Krissy Hall. "We performed better than a week ago and really raised our level of play. I hope we can continue that through the rest of the weekend and the fall."

Day two (Saturday) brought mixed results for the Cowgirls as they played both singles and doubles. In doubles, the team of Rebecca Berger and Carly Van Hollen defeated Carrie Schofield and Kristen MacWilliam of Gonzaga, 8-6, before falling 8-3 against Stefanie Doolittle and Jenna Tanzer. In number two doubles, Carolina Chaix and Jamie Nelson fell to Livia Cherman and Aleksandra, 8-6.

In flight two singles, Rebecca Berger earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kristen MacWilliam (Gonzaga). She will play Rebecca Bran of Montana in the finals of the consolation bracket. Sophomore Carolina Chaix defeated Cara Lehman (Montana), 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, to earn her way in to the finals of flight four singles. She will play fellow teammate Michelle Brown who earned a 6-2, 6-0 win against Allyson Lee of Gonzaga. In flight three, freshman Carly Van Hollen lost to Marina Nicolas of Washington State, 6-0, 6-2.

"I'm very pleased with the play of Carolina and Michelle making it in to the finals tomorrow," said head coach Krissy Hall. "They have played extremely well the entire tournament. I hope we can close out tomorrow on a strong note."
