Cowgirls Host First Day of Wyoming Invitational

The Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis Team completed their first day of competition as they hosted the University of Wyoming Invitational in Laramie. Wyoming, Montana State, UTEP and Air Force are playing in the invitational. The Cowgirls won 14 matches and lost nine in their first day of competition.
Individually, the Cowgirls have three girls in the finals in their respective flights. Junior Patricia Chien won her first round match against Karissa Walker of Air Force, 6-3, 6-1. Chien then took care of Nuria Lozano of Montana State 6-0, 6-3.
"Patricia had a great first day of this tournament, hopefully she can keep the momentum going and win her finals match," said head coach Pam Wildt. Chien will play Tea Spirta of UTEP in the Flight A singles final Saturday at noon.
Also in the finals is Amy Senko. She won matches over Katy Clarke from Montana State and Anna Hockett also of Montana State. Senko will play Danielle King of UTEP in the flight C final. Freshman Michelle Brown beat Jane McDonald of Air Force 6-4, 6-2 to win her first match of the day. Brown them took on Tyffani Thomas of Montana State and won that match 6-4, 7-5. Brown will play Teri Wilkerson of UTEP in the flight D final.
Freshman Kim Romero won her first round match 6-0, 6-2 against Vera Vasileva from Montana State. Romero then dropped her next match against Katherine Palider of UTEP 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Corina Lazar also won her first round match, then dropped her next against Ivette Duran of Montana State 6-4, 6-4. Sophomores Karolina Rowinski and Andrea House dropped their first round matches, but came back to win their second round matches. Junior Gwen Moser dropped her first match of the day to Teri Wilkerson of UTEP 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles play Wyoming went undefeated in the first round with one bye, but dropped the next four. Patricia Chien and Karolina Rowinski picked up a first round bye, then lost to Exelby and Furdyna of UTEP 8-3. Andrea House and Gwen Moser beat Wilkerson and palider of UTEP, then lost to the duo of Bushey and Walker of Air Force 8-3. Corina Lazar and Kim Romero picked up a first round win, but then lost to Spirta and King of UTEP. Rounding out the doubles play Amy Senko and Michelle Brown went 1-1 on the day. After picking up a first round win they also dropped their next match 8-3 to Luetolf and Clark from Montana State.
"I feel that we had a great opening round. I'm happy with the way we rebounded from a tough tournament last week. We came out today and played hard, it's great that we have three girls in the finals. If we keep focused and keep working hard we will have more good things to come," said Wildt.
The Cowgirls will begin play Saturday at the Cowgirl Tennis courts at 8:00 a.m.
