The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team will begin the 2012 spring season this weekend at home. They will host the Northern Colorado Bears, on Sunday, Jan. 22, with the match set for 1:00 p.m. It will be played at the UW Tennis Complex.

"We are excited to kick-off the spring season in front of our home crowd," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We had a productive fall with numerous highlights. Our newcomers have transitioned well into playing college tennis and the team is eager to get the season under way."

Wyoming returns four starters while welcoming four newcomers to this year's squad. They are led coming into the spring by All-Conference selection Veronica Popovici. She recorded a 10-2 mark during the fall which included a spot in the semi-finals of the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament. She along with doubles partner Simona Synkova went 9-1 and won the ITA Mountain Regional Doubles Championship. They enter the spring at the 44th ranked doubles team by the Campbell's/ITA National Rankings. Synkova went 8-4 in singles action while Sasa Nemcova recorded a 9-3 mark in fall action as well. As a team, the Cowgirls were selected 74th in the national rankings.

The Bears are currently 0-0 overall this season and will face Air Force before taking on UW. This is the 14th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 12-1. The last time the two teams met was January 23, 2011 as the Cowgirls defeated UNC, 7-0, in Greeley. Northern Colorado is coached by Brenda Vlasak who is in her tenth season as the head coach.
