MWC Tennis Tourney Opener to Feature Wyoming and Air Force

For the second straight year, the Wyoming women's tennis team will face the Air Force Academy Falcons in the opener of the Mountain West Conference Tennis Tournament. The teams will play on Wednesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. in Albuquerque. The Cowgirls enter the 2009 event as the eighth seed while the Falcons are the ninth seed in the tournament. The winner will take on the top-seeded UNLV Rebels on Thursday afternoon.

The two teams met in the first round of the 2008 MWC tournament, as Wyoming defeated the Falcons, 4-1.

The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with an overall record of 7-15 and 1-7 in conference play. Wyoming is currently led by junior Sarah Summerfield who is 18-16 overall, while finishing 3-5 in MWC play. She is followed closely by Carly Van Hollen and Rebecca Berger who are 16-18 and 15-18, respectively.

The Falcons are currently 10-16 overall and finished 0-8 in MWC play. This is the 17th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 10-6. The last time the two teams met was March 7, 2009 as the Cowgirls defeated the Falcons 5-2 in Laramie. AFA is coached by Kim Gidley, who is in her 11th season with the program.
