Cowgirl Tennis to face Boise State in MW Championships Opener

For the first time in MW tournament history, the Wyoming tennis team will face the Boise State Broncos in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Mountain West Tennis Championships, on Friday, April 25. The match is set for 11:00 a.m. Mountain Time at the Sierra Sport & Racquet Club in Fresno, Calif. The Cowgirls enter the week as the fifth seed while the Broncos are the fourth seed in the tournament.
"We are excited the tournament is finally here. The players have worked very hard to prepare up until this point," said head coach Dean Clower. "Coach Roghaar will have his team ready to go just as our team will be. Every meeting we have had with Boise State over the past three years has come down to the wire. I expect nothing less than that for this match. The team is ready and hungry to play. We had a great first practice and will continue tweaking a few things before Friday."
Wyoming brings in a 10-7 season record while finishing 4-1 in Mountain West action. Senior Veronica Popovici comes into the tournament with a 19-10 overall singles record and a 4-1 mark in league play. Four players Dorottya Jonas, Alma Espinosa, Christa Gecheva and Alena Vasileva have each gone 4-1 in league play as well. Popovici and Jonas are 13-12 overall in doubles action while going 3-2 in MW play at the number one position. Espinosa and Gecheva are 8-7 in dual action and 12-8 overall along with Vasileva and Silviya Zhelyazkova who posted a 4-2 record this spring while going 3-2 in MW play.
Boise State enters the championships 13-9 overall and 4-3 in MW play this season. This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools. Boise State leads the series 3-2. The last time the two teams met was April 11, 2014 as the Cowgirls defeated the Broncos, 5-2, in Laramie. They are coached by Beck Roghaar who is in his fourth season with the program.
