Cowgirl Tennis To Take On Aztecs At MWC Championships
April 26, 2011
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming women's tennis team will face the San Diego State Aztecs in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Mountain West Conference Tennis Tournament, on Thursday, April 28. The match is set for 10:00 a.m. at the University Tennis Complex in Fort Collins. The Cowgirls enter the week as the sixth seed while the Aztecs are the third seed in the tournament.
"We picked up a little bit of a momentum by winning our last two conference matches," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "All year we talked about peaking at the right time and that time is now. We know that for us to advance in the tournament we have to beat teams that we lost to in the regular season. We had a tough 4-3 loss to San Diego State and we believe that with some adjustments we can beat them in our own environment."
The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with an overall record of 13-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play to finish in sixth. The 13 wins are the second most in school history and it's the first time ever they have recorded back-to-back winning seasons.
Wyoming is currently led by freshman Veronica Popovici who is 27-9 overall and had a 5-3 mark in MWC play at the number one position. She is followed by Kim van Ginkel with a 24-8 record and 5-3 in conference action, while Simona Synkova is 20-14 overall. Sophomores Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova have posted 19 wins each while Carly Van Hollen and Rebecca Berger round things out with 16-12 and 15-9 records respectively.
SDSU is 15-9 overall and 6-2 in MWC action, while being ranked 50th in the current Campbell/ITA National rankings (4/26/11). This is the 14th meeting between the two schools. San Diego State leads the series 12-1. The last time the two teams met was March 31, 2011. The Aztecs won the match 4-3. San Diego State is coached by Peter Mattera who is in his 17th season.
