LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Cowgirl doubles team of Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova will compete this week at the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. Their opening match will be Thursday, Nov. 3, as they face Natalie Pluskota and Kata Szekely of Tennessee. The tournament runs from Thursday, Nov. 3-Sunday, Nov. 6 and is held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.

Synkova and Popovici qualified for the tournament after winning the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Tournament in Las Vegas two weeks ago. They went 5-0 en route to the championships with a finals win against Daivdson and Pelchat of Montana. They currently have an 8-0 mark this fall in doubles action.

"We are excited to represent the Mountain Region at the National Indoor Championships," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "Veronica and Simona are undefeated this fall going into the event where the best college players in the nation face off. We want to carry that momentum and come home with the National Indoor title."

Hosted by Columbia University, the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women. Heading the field are champions from USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country in October, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College "Super Bowl," and the singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions from the ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.

The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships was inaugurated in 1978 for the men and 1984 for the women. Past champions and finalists include current professionals John Isner (Georgia), James Blake (Harvard), Somdev Devvarman (Virginia), Irina Falconi (Georgia Tech), Lisa Raymond (Florida) and Bob and Mike Bryan (Stanford).
