The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (2-1 overall) closed out the CenturyTel/Premier Classic with a 3-1 (30-23, 30-23, 23-30, 30-23) win over the Texas Pan American Broncs (1-3 overall), on Saturday afternoon, in San Marcos, Texas.

"We played really well and had some nice momentum through the first two games," said head coach Pat Stangle. "For some reason we lost that in game three, but rebounded nicely in the fourth game to come away with the victory. Overall, I was pleased with the weekend."

UTPA took a slight advantage in game one as they went up by a score of 8-6. The Cowgirls evened things up at eight all, but two quick points by the Broncs put them back up by two, 11-9. Wyoming responded by scoring the next four of six points to tie it up and went on a 7-4 scoring run to go up by three 20-17. They continued to maintain their lead despite all efforts of the Broncs, and out scored them 10-6 the remainder of the way to win the game 30-23.

Game two started off very similar, but the Cowgirls jumped out to the 10-7 lead. UTPA scored the next three of four to pull within one, which Wyoming answered right back with a 9-2 scoring run to open up an eight point advantage, 20-12. That lead would extend to as many as ten as the Cowgirls continued to play a consistent game. They went on to win the game by the same score 30-23.

It was back and forth in the early part of the third game as neither team really seemed to gain a significant lead. With the score tied at 11 all, the Broncs took advantage of the break and went on a 10-4 run to open up their largest lead of the game 21-15. Wyoming tried to get back in to it, but could only manage to get to within four points, as UTPA took game three 30-23.

UW regained their composure in the fourth game. After exchanging points in the early going, the Cowgirls went on an 8-1 scoring run to open up a seven point advantage, 17-10. A very determined UTPA team wouldn't give up as they scored the next 11 of 16 to pull within one, 22-21. Unfortunately for them, they could only manage to score two points the rest of the way as the Cowgirls came away with a 30-23 win in the game and 3-1 in the match.

Three Cowgirls finished the match with double-digits kills, including freshman Annie Meyers. She recorded a career high 21 kills and 16 digs, while hitting .327 (21-5-49). Rachel Smith followed with 17 kills and 13 digs, along with being named to the All-Tournament Team, and Lauren Scott had 13 kills and three block assists. Freshman Micah Lines had an impressive showing as she recorded a career high 32 digs in the match followed by Meyers with 16, Smith with 13 and Tasha Weishahn with ten. Weishahn also recorded a season high 57 assists. As a team, Wyoming hit .264 (69-22-178) for the match, had 84 digs and four total team blocks.

UTPA was led by Heather Bravo, who finished with 20 kills and nine digs. She was followed by Kellie Phillips with 14 kills and eight digs. Karen Lyons finished the match with 25 digs followed by Chrissie Carrigan with 18 and Chelsea Blakely with 11. The Broncs hit .142 (52-27-176) as a team.

The Cowgirls will now open up their home season on Friday, Sept. 1 against Southern Illinois and Birmingham Southern as they will host the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic.
