Cowgirls Advance To UNIWYO Classic Championship

LARAMIE, Wyo. - In their first match of the day, the Wyoming Volleyball Team (4-1 overall) pulled out a 3-1 victory over the San Jose State Spartans, on Saturday afternoon, at the UNIWYO Cowgirl Classic. The scores were 36-36, 30-28, 30-18, 30-24 in favor of the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls opened up as the hot team with an early 7-1 lead, but San Jose State stormed back with an 11-3 run to take their first lead of the game 12-10. They continued to build upon that lead at as Wyo-ming struggled to score points. But this game was one of runs. Down 26-20, the Cowgirls went on an 8-2 run to tie it all up at 28 and really made a game of it. The two teams continued to trade points with no one really looking like they wanted to win. It would take 22 more points before the Spartans would come out on top with a 38-36 win.
Game two started similar to game one with Wyoming take the early 7-3 run. San Jose State took a time-out and scored the next six of eight points to tie it all up at nine all. The Cowgirls would immediately take the lead back and hold on to it until the Spartans tied it back up at 18. A 7-2 scoring run from UW helped them regain a seven point margin and this time they held on to it. They would win game two, 30-23 San Jose State scored the first couple of points of game three and things seemed to even out. Two big runs from the Cowgirls after that really gave them control of the game and the match. A 5-1 run put them up 11-6 and then another 10-2 run gave them a nine point margin, 25-14. The Spartans were only able to score four more points as UW took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 30-18 game three win.
The two teams traded points to begin game four, but with it all tied up another 10-3 from the Cowgirls gave them a 20-12 advantage. San Jose State continued to battle but could only pull within four points before Wyoming would win game four, 30-24, and the match 3-1.
"We feel better about today's performance," said head coach Jim Barnes. "We're still not where we
need to be, but it was nice to see the offensive really starting to click. Offensively, we put up some impres-sive
numbers and that's due to more consistency in our serve/receive. Defensively, we won some big points
which I like to see."
The Spartans were led by Kimberly Noble, who finished with a team high 20 kills and 11 digs. SJSU hit .144 (59-35-167) for the match.
Five Cowgirls finished the match with double-figures in kills, including junior Sara Maytorena. She finished with a season high 17 kills and a .429 (17-5-28) hitting percentage. Outside hitter Michele Rauter led the team with a season high 24 kills and ten digs, while Vanessa Latimer recorded a career high ten kills and .667 (10-0-15) hitting percentage. Both Leah Powers and Jill Roslund finished the match with 11 kills. Wyoming hit .329 (78-25-161) and out blocked the Spartans 12 to five.
The Cowgirls will wrap up the tournament tonight with a match-up against Big Sky opponent Weber State at 7:30 p.m.
