UW Volleyball Closes Out Jayhawk Invitational with Victory

The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (5-3 overall) wrapped up the Jayhawk Invitational with a four game victory (28-30, 30-21, 30-18, 30-26) against the St. Peter's College Peahens (2-10 overall), on Saturday morning, in Lawrence.

Wyoming was led by Rachel Smith who finished with a team high 19 kills and 12 digs. She was followed by Angie Hellbaum with 13 kills, 14 digs and two block assists, while setter Tasha Weishahn had 28 assists and six kills. Carissa Lee led the way with 27 digs. The Cowgirls hit .206 (58-25-160) for the match.

The Peahens were led by Kim Mendoza who had 13 kills and 17 digs, while Stephanie Phillips added ten kills and six total blocks. St. Peter's hit .151 (49-24-166) and out blocked the Cowgirls eight to four.

"This was a gut match for us," said UW head coach Pat Stangle. "It was one of those things we had to grind through because of the tough five game match last night. We were a little sluggish, but it was a good win even though we had to get through a lot of adversity."

The Peahens took a slight 7-4 lead in the beginning of the first game. Wyoming tied it up at nine all, but St. Peters scored three of the next four points to go up 12-10. The Cowgirls responded with a 9-4 run to take their first significant lead, 19-16. Unfortunately SPC wouldn't go away as the evened things up at 20. UW jumped out once again to take a 25-23 advantage, but the Peahens scored the last 7 of 12 points to win the first game 30-28.

 

 

Wyoming came out fired up in the second game and took a five point lead, 10-5. The Peahens battled back and pulled to within two, 12-10. The Cowgirls went on a 9-3 run to regain a seven point advantage, 21-14, which they extended to ten, 28-18, and went on to win 30-21.

The third game was all Cowgirls as well as they jumped out to a double-figure lead 12-2. It was never close as they won the game 30-18 and a 2-1 lead in the match.

St. Peter's responded in game three by taking a 7-4 lead in the early going. The Cowgirls evened it up at seven all and took a two point lead, 9-7. The Peahens went on a run to make it 16-16. After that it was all Cowgirls as they would never relinquish the lead to win the game 30-26 and the match 3-1.
